New Zealand has no Amazon Prime?!

While not technically correct, this is a de-facto truth I often share with clients to highlight a key change in their online shopping life that comes with relocating to New Zealand.

The biggest difference is that NZ customers are effectively using Amazon as an international importer, rather than a domestic marketplace with a local warehouse network

Here is the practical breakdown of what you can expect:

1. Product range: US Amazon is dramatically larger

In the US, shoppers get access to almost everything. In NZ, many listings become unavailable once your delivery address is set, with third-party sellers often restricting international shipping entirely. Electronics, batteries, and heavy items are frequently blocked. Amazon Australia is often the best compromise for faster transit and easier GST handling, though it has a noticeably smaller catalog than the US site.

2. Delivery times: the US experience is vastly faster

While US Prime members often enjoy same-day or 1–2 day delivery, international transit takes longer. Orders from Amazon AU typically take 5–10 business days, and Amazon US orders commonly range from 9–25 business days.

3. Prime membership is much less useful in NZ

In the US, Prime is central to the Amazon experience with ultra-fast shipping and huge inventory advantages. In NZ, while Prime Video works normally, Prime shipping perks mostly don’t apply internationally and shipping benefits are inconsistent.

4. Shipping costs are the biggest pain point in NZ

US customers are used to free shipping and low-cost returns. In contrast, NZ buyers frequently encounter high international shipping fees and import/GST charges. Returns are also slower and sometimes uneconomical. A common complaint from NZ buyers is that an item looks cheap until the shipping is added.

5. Delivery reliability to NZ is OK

The good news is that once packages leave Australia or the US, Amazon logistics are highly reliable, with couriers like DHL receiving positive feedback. The real bottlenecks tend to be seller eligibility, dispatch delays, or customs handling, rather than the final delivery inside NZ.

Top Tips for NZ Shoppers:

  • Amazon AU is best for convenience and speed

  • Amazon US is best for selection and niche products

  • Delivery is much slower and more expensive than the US domestic Amazon experience

  • Prime is far less compelling in NZ
