Most Kiwi expats won't face COVID isolation charges when returning to NZ

It’s great that expat Kiwis now have certainty around the quarantine payments issue. And most of them won’t have to pay for managed isolation when they come back home.

Moving countries during a pandemic is complicated enough, so that’s one less unknown for people planning and budgeting to come back to New Zealand.

Everyone arriving in New Zealand is currently required to undertake 2 weeks in a government run isolation facility. This costs around NZ$96 million per month.

It was announced in August 2020 that New Zealanders, and residents will only have to pay charges if they:

  • Leave New Zealand after the regulations come into force, or

  • Visit New Zealand for less than 90 days

And family members travelling with returning New Zealanders are exempt from charges too.
