Two Maori concepts at the heart of New Zealand society

April 2, 2019 Bridget Romanes

In this clip the Christchurch community expresses its feelings about the 15 March terrorist attack in terms of aroha and whanau.

These words have their foundation in Maori culture and language, and are widely used in New Zealand.

Aroha means love.

Whanau is your extended family, family group. In modern usage it also includes close friends who may not have kinship but are like family.  In a country of just under 5 million people, a strong sense of connection and the importance of personal relationships underpin how we operate.

Bridget is Principal at Mobile Relocation. Working in partnership with HR and executive teams, Mobile helps bring expat staff to fill key roles in companies and organisations throughout New Zealand.

Mobile Relocation - connecting newcomers with what they need to thrive in New Zealand.
