5 Books for expats in New Zealand

For many people who have arrived in a new country, reading novels written by local authors or non fiction books about the place they are now going to call ‘home’ can help enormously with the process of resettlement and reestablishment.

Here are 5 recommendations for wonderful New Zealand books to enjoy over the summer months.

1. Hiakai: Modern Māori Cuisine by Monique Fiso

This beautifully designed and photographed book, the first from Monique Fiso,  won the 2021 Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand award for illustrated non fiction.   
It will offer a wonderful introduction to the indigenous cuisine of Aotearoa New Zealand and its ingredients, practice, culture, history and knowledge.  

2. The Slow Roll by Simon Lendrum

For people who like detective thrillers this is a brilliantly written and intriguing debut crime novel with a Kiwi Twist!.
Set in Auckland the story is fast paced and involves all the intricacies of after-hours life, dodgy commerce and criminal loyalties. 
Featuring two lead characters with intelligence and empathy who just leave you wanting more to read.

3. The Maori Picture Dictionary by Ross Calman

If you are starting on your Te Reo Maori journey this comprehensive and playful book is a great reference - and ideal for holiday reading. 
It includes over 1400 of the most common words used in daily life and has a sense of fun that makes it easy to use - a great introduction to Maori language for the whole family.

4. Return to Harikoa Bay by Owen Marshall

The latest collection from NZ’s ‘master of short stories’ offers 33 tales across a wide range of subjects, from all corners of NZ life.
Untimely deaths to unusual discoveries made about friends or neighbours, from burnishing an overseas trip to a tale about saving a business venture - lose yourself this summer in this quality work by one of NZ’s best.

5. A Summary Sunday morning by Margaret Mahy

This childrens book is a Kiwi classic - a lively, read-aloud story about a group of children, dogs, a cat, and a gaggle of geese enjoying their summery Saturday morning when though things do not go quite as planned. A fun read for the whole family.
